Netflix Announces New Slate Of Dave Chappelle Comedy Specials

It appears Ted Sarandos and Netflix are not giving up on Dave Chappelle any time soon.

The streaming platform announced on Friday that it will be releasing four new comedy specials executive produced and hosted by the controversial comic.

The series of specials is dubbed Chappelle’s Home Team, each featuring a different comic introduced by Chappelle.

The first special will feature Earthquake (real name Nathaniel Martin Stroman). His special, titled Earthquake: Legendary, premieres on February 28. Donnell Rawlings will be the featured comic for another one of the specials. Each one of the featured comics chosen by Chappelle have been in the stand-up game for at least 30 years.

“I’ve been doing this a long time and comedians like Quake and Donnell are not only friends but have inspired my own career,” said Chappelle. “Anyone in the comedy community knows these names and knows their time to shine is long overdue. I am proud to be a part of this moment.”

Stan Lathan, who typically directs Chappelle’s content, will again direct and executive produce alongside Chappelle, Earthquake, Rikki Hughes and Jermaine Smith.

Chappelle draws a large audience for the streamer, however, his last Netflix special The Closer received a great deal of criticism from the media, Netflix employees as well as from many of his fans due to comments he made about the transgender movement. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos defended the special at first, claiming free speech, but later admitted “I screwed up” by not being more sensitive to Netflix staffers. Still, Sarandos backed the program as “consistent with our comedy offering, it’s consistent with Dave Chappelle’s comedy brand and this is … one of those times when there’s something on Netflix that you’re not going to like.”

At the time, The Closer was Chappelle’s final special of a total of six that he contracted with Netflix to produce, meaning Netflix has decided to extend the deal.

Chappelle is also slated to headline a live comedy festival at the Hollywood Bowl called Netflix is a Joke, which will kick off on April 28.
