Melissa McBride Exits ‘Walking Dead’ Spinoff

The Walking Dead just lost one half of its planned Carol Peletier and Daryl Dixon spinoff. Melissa McBride, who plays Carol on the zombie drama, will no longer star alongside Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl, in a planned series about the two friends, AMC confirms to Decider.

“Melissa McBride has given life to one of the most interesting, real, human and popular characters in The Walking Dead Universe,” AMC said in a statement shared with Decider. “Unfortunately, she is no longer able to participate in the previously announced spin-off focused on the Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier characters, which will be set and filmed in Europe this summer and premiere next year.”

AMC added, “Relocating to Europe became logistically untenable for Melissa at this time. We know fans will be disappointed by this news, but The Walking Dead Universe continues to grow and expand in interesting ways and we very much hope to see Carol again in the near future.”

TVLine was first to report the news of McBride’s exit. The outlet reports that with McBride no longer involved, the spinoff series will instead focus on Daryl, Reedus’ character. The spinoff is one of many planned upcoming series that will premiere following the end of The Walking Dead, which recently wrapped filming on its final season. The Carol and Daryl spinoff was announced by AMC in 2020. Reedus said in a statement at the time, “I feel incredibly honored to be a part of The Walking Dead. This show changed my life and career and everyone involved has truly been a family for me over the last decade.”

He added, “Daryl’s relationship with Carol has always been my favorite relationship on the show (sorry Rick). I love the way these characters interact and relate to each other on so many levels and can’t wait to see where their ride goes from here.”

The Walking Dead is has five spinoff shows in total: Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond, as well as the upcoming Tales of the Walking Dead, Daryl’s untitled spinoff and Isle of the Dead.
