Gilbert Gottfried dead at 67 after ‘a long illness’

Iconic comedian Gilbert Gottfried has died at the age of 67 after suffering “a long illness.”

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Gilbert Gottfried after a long illness,” his family announced in a statement on social media Tuesday. “In addition to being the most iconic voice in comedy, Gilbert was a wonderful husband, brother, friend and father to his two young children.

“Although today is a sad day for all of us, please keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor. Love, the Gottfried family.”

Gilbert’s rep, Glenn Schwartz, told TMZ he died from a heart abnormality called ventricular tachycardia due to myotonic dystrophy type II.

According to the Mayo Clinic, ventricular tachycardia is “a heart rhythm problem caused by irregular electrical signals in the lower chambers of the heart.” Myotonic dystrophy is a type of genetic muscular dystrophy that, according to National Institutes of Health, affects “the muscles and other body systems.”

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1955, Gottfried began doing standup around the city when he was just 15 years old. The comedian was known just as much for his raunchy bits as his unique voice, lending his one-of-a-kind pipes to Aflac commercials for years, as well as famously voicing Iago, the sidekick to the villain Jafar in Disney’s “Aladdin” in 1992.

His long list of credits also includes “Beverly Hills Cop II,” “Problem Child,” “Look Who’s Talking II” and “The Aristocrats.”

As recently as January, Gottfried was still doing interviews, opening up about the sudden loss of friend and fellow comic, Bob Saget.

“Whenever I hear about somebody’s death I always think well okay, okay, were they on drugs? Were they drinking? Were they way overweight? Out of shape? Or something and then you find out no, no, none of those are true,” Gottfried said at the time.

When asked what Saget would want for his celebration of life, Gottfried said he wouldn’t want anything too serious.

“I think he would want it not too sensitive,” he said of Saget’s funeral. “I think he would have wanted stuff kept at a lighter level and maybe a little sick.

He also had his own podcast, “Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast,” which posted a new episode on Monday, although it featured an interview with Bob Costas from 2015.

Gottfried is survived by his wife Dara Kravitz, whom he wed in 2007, and two children Lily Aster Gottfried, 14, and Max Aaron Gottfried, 12.
