Fainting is a common problem and people often become panicky when they find a person fainting in front of them. So it will help a lot if one gets to know what is fainting and how to give first aid in cases of fainting.Fainting Causes

Fainting, also called syncope or swooning, is sudden loss of consciousness due to acute decrease of blood supply in brain. This senseless position lasts for few seconds. Causes of fainting may be many. Sometimes in a hot and humid weather, people feel suffocated in a crowd and loose consciousness. Sometimes excessive stress and threat or sight of injury and blood lead people to faint. Physical factors such as standing too long, locked knees, excessively tight fittings dress or other illnesses such as fatigue, low blood pressure, low blood sugar and dehydration can be the causes of fainting.

A fainted person should be treated as soon as possible. The first thing to do is to sprinkle some cold water on the patient’s face and neck and bring back consciousness.  Give him some water to drink also.

Other aids should be given according to the seriousness of the patient. Make the patient lie on a flat surface with legs raised higher than the head. This increases the oxygen supply to the brain. Hold his legs in the same position for few minutes and the person should regain consciousness gradually. When a person faints, loosen his clothes as this will remove any obstruction in inhaling oxygen. The object is to let the person breathe properly and easily. In this way you can start the treatment of a fainted person.

You can give the fainted person some peppermint oil to smell. It has been found that the antispasmodic property of peppermint oil can soothe the ailing nerves. Moreover the refreshing smell of peppermint oil can act as a stimulant to the brain. So pour few drops of this oil on a handkerchief and hold it under the nose of the patient. It helps in overcoming swooning.

After the person recovers from fainting, he or she feels very weak. To overcome this weakness the patient may be treated with warm milk. It can revitalize his nerve and give him strength. Tea can do wonders in post fainting treatment. Hot ginger tea or basil tea helps to boost his overall blood circulation and helps to regain full energy and consciousness.
